Ken Shields has been involved in
operational accounting since 1976 when he went to work as an assistant
bookkeeper in the days before mini and micro-computers. Everything
was done manually in large journals and ledgers and verified using miles
of paper tape in 10-key calculators. He has worked on large
computers and small computers and in 1988 decided to leave his job as a
CFO and become a Systems Analyst. From 1989 onward he worked at
increasingly more difficult programming projects until the bulk of
systems work was outsourced to India. He then became a CFO again,
this time in charge of ALL systems, financial and otherwise, in a
company that grew 10 times in a period of 3 years. A larger company
offered to buy the company Ken worked for and Ken's systems passed an
audit by the purchasing company's accountants. When the company was
sold, his job was eliminated by the new owners who had their own CFO.
Ken received his Accounting degree from the University of Maryland in 1977 and did graduate studies in Tax Law at the University of Baltimore from 1981 to 1983. He has operated his own business as well has helped others operate theirs. Ken decided to hang out his shingle so that smaller companies who can't afford a full time CFO have a ready access to the skill set he developed and proved over 30 years.
